En Alameda del Valle, dimos la bienvenida al mes de Mayo con cielos azules y soleados. En Cascadas tuvimos, durante el puente, cuatro días espléndidos para disfrutar de conversaciones en ingles y variadas actividades medioambientales.
Cada día resultó en una experiencia variada y especial. Las actividades empezaron el viernes con una cena compartida y conversación en inglés. Juntos plantamos distintos arbustos que ayudarán a crear un micro-habitat en la finca. De este modo fomentamos un espacio seguro que promueve la vida salvaje, la atracción de insectos polinizadores y distintas aves. Después dimos un paseo disfrutando la puesta del sol.
El domingo y el lunes fueron días llenos y ricos con una mezcla de familias, adultos, un grupo de jóvenes de una iglesia de Madrid y niños de familias refugiadas que están acogidas en un centro próximo. Las actividades incluyeron un paseo a lo largo del bello Rio Lozoya, parando para observar los pájaros, arboles y plantas.
Mientras caminábamos, también enseñábamos en ingles sobre hierbas y plantas medicinales y comestibles, que encontrábamos alrededor a cada paso, por ejemplo: uva espinosa, diente de león, trébol rojo, y llantén. Muchos de los niños hicieron dibujos de hojas y plantas que les interesaban y escribían sus cualidades medicinales. Luego probamos algunas de las hierbas y flores en una infusión que compartimos a la sombra de los arboles, mientras descansamos.
El paseo junto al rio animó un nuevo vocabulario en inglés y una conexión con la belleza del valle. Hubo oportunidades para sentarse y relajarse, meter los dedos de los pies en agua fresca en un día caluroso. Cuando llegamos al puente hicimos una introducción divertida al juego favorito de Winnie the Pooh que se llama Poohsticks.
Las actividades continuaron durante las tardes, incluyendo la construcción de hoteles de insectos para animar la vida de estos en el jardín, un taller de pintura en piedras, un partido de rounders, juego tradicional ingles y una actividad de plantación de semillas. Todo ello en un entorno en el que se facilitaba al mismo tiempo la conversación en inglés y la educación medioambiental.
El martes hicimos una preciosa ruta y aprovechamos la tarde para aprender inglés por medio de la música, compartiendo canciones de origen Inglés y escocés, descubriendo nuevas palabras y expresiones. Disfrutamos de un tiempo especial con la visita de una amiga del valle que trajo su guitarra. Nos conmovió una música tan bella en canciones que expresaban mensajes de amor y superación y ensalzaban las maravillas del mundo natural. Esto fue un maravilloso cierre para este encuentro de Inglés y medioambiente.
Es nuestra esperanza que los participantes llevaran con ellos un sentido renovado del cuidado y conexión con la creación y por supuesto una mejor comprensión, confianza
y entusiasmo por el inglés.
English in the Mountains
In Alameda, the start of May was welcomed with blue skies and sunshine, and at Cascadas, with four days of English speaking and environmental activities.
The long weekend was great and each day brought a varied and special experience. Activities commenced on Saturday with a shared meal, English conversation, gardening and a sunset walk. Together we planted three trees/bushes which will help to create a microhabitat in the garden, creating a safe space for wildlife and encouraging birds and pollinating insects.
Sunday & Monday were full and rich days with a mix of families, independent adults, church youth groups from Madrid and refugee children living locally. Activities included a paseo along the beautiful Lozoya River, taking time to notice birds, trees and plants. Along the way, we also taught in English about medicinal and edible herbs and plants we could find all around us, such as hawthorn, dandelion, red clover and plantain. Many of the children drew pictures of leaves and flowers which interested them and wrote down their medicinal properties and, later on, we were able to taste some of the herbs and flowers infused in a naturally sweet tea, shared together during a rest in the shade of the trees.
The riverside paseo encouraged new English vocabulary and connection with the beauty of the valley, with opportunities to sit and relax, dip toes in the cool water and a fun introduction to Winnie the Pooh’s favourite game of ‘Poohsticks’ on the bridge!
Activities continued in the afternoons, including the construction of bug hotels to encourage insect life in the garden, painting stones, a traditional English game of rounders, and seed planting, all infused with English conversation and environmental education.
On Tuesday, we walked a beautiful paseo and spent the afternoon learning English through music - sharing songs from England, Scotland and Spain, and learning new vocabulary along the way. It was a precious moment to draw the 4-day festivities to a close, as we gathered around a friend from the valley and her guitar, moved and enthused by the beautiful music with messages of love, resilience, and the wonders of the natural environment.
It is our hope that the guests took away with them a renewed sense of care and connection with nature, and of course an improved understanding, confidence and enthusiasm for English.
